Starting Out in Gauge 3

Members of the Society tell how they came to be involved with Gauge 3; the reasons for their 'conversion' from the smaller scales; what it is that they find most satisfying about modelling in the largest 'scenic' model railway scale.

Various members have a different 'take' on the subject. For some, the prospect of 'live steam' was the driving force. Although live steam is available in smaller scales, it is the volume of Gauge 3 locos which make more realistic models possible, with the option of coal firing being a benefit of the greater space available between the frames, within which to fit the firebox.

For those not looking to go down the 'live steam' path, there is the space into which to fit radio control equipment and batteries, without visually destroying the effect with bits of equipment and controls sticking out of the model.

Then there is, quite simply, the imposing sight of the large, finely detailed models, their stately progress along the track, with the sound of steel-on-steel echoing out.

Whatever the reason for modelling in Gauge 3, the result is the same, large and satisfying models which command the attention and admiration of the onlooker.

So, if you still need convincing there is a good reason to go with Gauge 3, read the 'tales from the converts'!

Convert #1 : From 'O' Gauge

Convert #2 : From 'OO' Gauge

Convert #3 : Gauge 3 by a (fortunate) fluke!
