An established supplier of a large range of kits and parts for Gauge1, The Wagon and Carriage Works also offers a small range of Gauge 3 items.
Their major offerings are three etched brass wagon kits which comprise just the principal etchings for the body and solebars. Unlike their Gauge1 kits, which are complete with castings, the G3 customer has to supply his own fittings, including end stanchions, buffers, W-irons, axleguards (the roof for covered wagons) and much of the other detailing which is normally supplied as cast fitments in a complete kit.
These are not kits for the 'beginner' : Skill with a soldering iron and/or butane micro-flame torch is necessary (it takes a lot of heat to solder thick layers of brass) and many of the essential parts missing from the kits will have to be made, since the authentic parts for these prototypes are not generally available. Perhaps they should be viewed more as an aid to the scratchbuilder than kits?
These kits are worth the effort but will require some research and determination to produce an accurate model.
Currently available are the GCR 10 Ton sliding door van, LNER 8 Ton Refrigerator van and LBSC ballast wagon.
At around 45 Pounds per kit they offer good value.
Also on offer is a limited range of detailing parts for LNER carriages (including some very good torpedo vents for Gresley stock), a few BR and LNER transfer sets and some resin castings for lineside structures.
The proprietor, Peter Marshall, has long been a Member of The Gauge 3 Society.
(Footnote : To the left can be seen examples of the GCR Van and LNER Refrigerator Van as built and awaiting painting..... articles covering the building of these kits will be found on this website in the 'downloads' section).
